The Minister of the Interior of the Generalitat, Joan Ignasi Elena (ERC), has admitted that the controversial change in the leadership of the Mossos d’Esquadra was carried out by him without notifying or consulting the government partners of Junts. Elena, in an interview on Rac1, has defended that the election of a new leader for the body was her decision and has revealed that she has offered Major Josep Lluís Trapero a position of “analysis” within the body.
During the interview, Elena has assured that when she agreed to the counseling, she did not intend to dismiss Trapero and made the decision after a round of conversations with various Mossos d’Esquadra commanders. The counselor has defended the election of Josep Maria Estela as chief curator, understanding that he is a person with more “orientation towards territorial issues”. Elena has denied that there is any revenge or “purge” in the removal of Trapero. “At a certain moment I considered, because it is my obligation and my prerogative, that the best person for the new project was not Trapero, but another person and a new team. It is not so much that you consider that he is an inappropriate person, but that there is a better one”, Elena has argued. The counselor understands that with Estela there will be a “renewal” and a “new generation” of Mossos.
Regarding Trapero, the counselor has limited himself to revealing that a document has been transferred to the mayor with the tasks that they believe that the former head of the body “would have to do”, related to the analysis and future risks, and Trapero is now examining it before returning to work on January 25. Elena has denied that the mayor’s dismissal was related to an alleged refusal by Trapero to put an escort on the ERC leader, Oriol Junqueras.
Another of the members of the police leadership whose dismissal has been accompanied by controversy is that of the mayor, former head of criminal investigation Toni Rodríguez, who will now be in charge of the Rubí police station (Barcelona). Elena has assured that she is not aware of political interference by former Minister Miquel Buch or by the President of the Parliament, Laura Borràs on investigations led by Rodríguez on alleged cases of corruption in these positions. The counselor maintains that the dismissal of the mayor does not put any investigation at risk. “I’d rather die than cover up corruption”, and added: “What interest can ERC have in covering up corruption, when it hasn’t had any cases in its history?”
Regarding the relays in the dome of the Interior, Elena has asked to give explanations in the Parlament “the sooner the better”.
