Thailand’s Ministry of Justice will allow inmates of certain prisons in the kingdom to keep dogs. Pets will help new owners overcome anxiety, depression and eradicate antisocial behavior among convicts. Writes about it
TASS…
This is a pilot project. At the moment, only four prisons are participating in it – Nakhon Ratchasima, Rayong, Klongphai and Khaobin. The Department of Corrections will test the effectiveness of animal therapy. It is assumed that in this way the prisoners will be able to psychologically prepare for their return to society after entering from custody.
According to the Minister of Justice, Somsak Thepsutkhin, the department, together with animal associations and shelters, are looking for dogs for the project. It is unclear how much time the inmates will spend with their pets. It is reported that the prisoner will pick up a dog that will match his character and temperament. In addition, prisoners will be taught how to properly handle and care for animals.
If such an initiative is successful, the authorities intend to extend it to other correctional institutions in the country.
In June, the victims of the collapse of a house in Miami were sent to help “treatment” dogs. The animals helped people in stress and painful anticipation to cope with emotions, while rescuers looked for survivors under the rubble and lifted the bodies of the dead.
