Delone Redden was convicted and is expected to spend 19 to 48 months in prison; judge says attack did not interfere with sentence
The man that attacked a Las Vegas judge (USA) in early January upon hearing that he would not be entitled to pay bail, he must spend 19 to 48 months in prison. The sentence was handed down on Monday (8 January 2024) by the same judge. The information is from the newspaper The New York Times.
Delone Redden appeared in court on Monday (8 January) wearing protective gloves, a “muzzle” style mask and handcuffs. On January 3, upon hearing that he would not be granted bail, he jumped 62-year-old Judge Mary Kay Holthus and knocked her down. The man fought with the people who tried to take him away from the magistrate (see the video below).
Redden was on trial for aggravated assault causing bodily harm. During the session on Monday (8 January), the judge said she wanted to “make clear” that last week's attack would not cause her to change the sentence in the case analyzed. According to her, any charges related to the incident would be the responsibility of another magistrate.
In video of the Jan. 3 hearing, Redden had pleaded guilty and was denied bail because of his criminal history.
The man's lawyer says he would behave well on probation and that it would be worth “risk” the granting of bail payment. The judge responds: “With this history, it is not possible”. The defendant then leaves his seat and jumps towards the judge.
