MADRID. Two hundred and fifty speakers from all over the world and three thousand participants gathered at the Civitas Metropolitano stadium in Madrid, home of Atletico, for the XXXI Isokinetic Congress, organized in collaboration with FIFA: three days of work, concluded yesterday, on the theme “Football Medicine : a bridge between science and practice” with a focus on footballer injuries – present, among others, Simone Verdi, former Toro, just promoted to Serie A with Como. Diagnosis, surgery and rehabilitation never go out of fashion, but they represent a past that will necessarily have to be recalibrated on the new frontiers that are opening up in the study of the interaction, precisely, between biomechanics and neuroscience.
«A large number of injuries occur in the presence of a cognitive disturbance, i.e. the difficulty a footballer encounters in adapting his athletic or technical gesture to an unexpected scenario, such as a sudden change of direction or a feint of play», he explains Francesco Della Villa, who is also director of the Isokinetic Study Center. It all starts from the brain, whose anatomical structures govern the movement of the body in real time. When reaction times are shortened to fractions of a second, as happens for example when a footballer finds himself having to face a change in direction from the opponent or an unexpected trajectory of the ball, the fatal cognitive disturbance occurs: the body does not has the necessary time to collect and translate the information from the brain into appropriate movements and the injury is determined.
Among the speakers, Professor Dustin Grooms, a well-known orthopedist from Ohio University who has long been involved in the interrelationship between neuroscience and biomechanics and has given rise to joint research projects with Isokinetic, a sports medicine center of excellence created thirty years ago in Bologna and today a global reference with offices in Italy and England. The city of Turin was represented by the team of doctors and re-educators of the Isokinetic center led by Director Fabrizio Tencone.
