The official added that the meeting, which is the first of its kind between the two presidents since Biden took office last January, will be held next Monday.
The announcement of the summit between Biden and the Chinese president comes hours after the unveiling of an agreement between the United States and China to increase cooperation between them to address the effects of climate change, including reducing methane emissions, phasing out coal consumption and protecting forests.
The framework agreement was announced by John Kerry, the US envoy on the climate file, and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinhua, at the United Nations Climate Conference held in Glasgow, and the two considered it a way to push the summit towards success.
Earlier, the head of the United Nations Climate Conference acknowledged that the commitments made by countries so far in the climate talks do a lot to tame global warming, and called on them to work towards signing an ambitious agreement during the remaining two days of talks.
“Together, we have shown our support for the success of COP26, including some specific items that will advance ambitions, but let me be clear that this declaration is a step we can build on to bridge the gap…Every step counts now,” Kerry told a news conference. We have a long way to go.”
“So we must move faster and reduce methane emissions also faster, we must continue to raise the bar, and most of all, we must take action in order to maintain the 1.5°C target,” he added.
For his part, the chief negotiator of the Chinese delegation to the climate conference said that Beijing is committed to improving cooperation with Washington in the field of action to address climate change.
Speaking through an interpreter, Qi Jinhua told reporters at the conference that China will advance its emission reduction targets and plan to develop a national plan on methane.
“The two sides will work together and with other parties to ensure the success of the COP26 conference and facilitate the achievement of an outcome that is ambitious and balanced at the same time,” he said.
