75% as a minimum and 95% as an optimal goal. These are the coverage objectives of the flu vaccine, indicated by the Ministry of Health for all target groups identified in view of the 2022-2023 immunization campaign that will start in October. But what are the categories for which flu vaccination is recommended and “will it be offered actively and for free” as part of the campaign? The list, reported in a ministerial circular, first of all mentions people at high risk of complications or hospitalizations related to influenza: therefore over 65, pregnant and postpartum women, people from 6 months to 65 years with pathologies of which increase the risk of influenza.
And then there are the essential service operators, starting with health personnel and continuing with the police, firefighters and other socially useful categories. Finally, the personnel who for work reasons are in contact with animals that could be a source of infection by non-human influenza viruses (from breeders to veterinarians). There are also other groups for which influenza vaccination is strongly recommended.
