L'flu continues to be felt and “with the return to school of children and young people, the full resumption of work and the buses full again, we can expect a small surge in cases”, explains Massimo Ciccozzi, head of the Statistics Unit, to Adnkronos Salute medicine and epidemiology of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the Bio-Medico Campus of Rome. Moreover, “the peak of the seasonal epidemic has not yet been reached”, specifies the expert.
The resumption of school activities “will favor the spread not only of influenza but also of the many respiratory viruses that are circulating, such as adenovirus, respiratory syncytial viruses, but also gastrointestinal pathogens”.
But when will the flu peak arrive in 2024?
As regards the peak, however, “it has not been reached: to be certain you need to have data that certifies the decline in cases. And this is not happening. The data from the Higher Institute of Health are clear, everything is still increasing We are waiting to see what will happen with the opening of schools and when the decline will begin”, concludes Ciccozzi who however still invites people to get vaccinated: “to think that we are close to the peak therefore the vaccine is not needed is absolutely wrong. Even when the decrease in cases, in fact, we are always faced with infections and we can get sick with all the consequences”.
