The FIFA President made news again after a press conference in which he once again defended his proposal for a World Cup every two years. Infantino was invited to an institutional event in Israel, and commented that he did not understand the criticisms of the proposal, since other competitions are even annual. “If the Super Bowl is played every year, why not the World Cup every other year?” He said referring to the highest football competition, which is held annually in the United States.
According to Infantino, the change from going from one World Cup every four years to every two would not negatively affect anything; “FIFA studies conclude that it would not diminish the magic and of the tournament because its frequency would not affect its quality and reputation.”
The decision has not yet been made, since they want there to be consensus, but we all know that when FIFA proposes something, in the end it ends up achieving it. What they have already agreed to, Infantino recalled, is that the 2026 World Cup has 48 teams, thus increasing the number of participants.
FIFA ensures that most of the sports tournaments that arouse the most excitement are annually, so there would be nothing wrong in holding them every two. Many federations, clubs and even players have been against it for different reasons. Some because of the tight schedules that the players already have, with almost no time to rest, and others because of the possibility of reducing the importance of club competitions.
FIFA will listen carefully to all voices and, hopefully, make the decision that best suits this beautiful sport that we all love. Football needs some changes, but not exactly at the national team level. Fans demand more transparency and decision mechanisms in the clubs, which are the ones that truly sustain the sport.
