In Mid-Ohio comes the first, longed-for victory of the season for the Penske team. It was Josef Newgarden who brought her home. The 2-time champion of the US open-wheel series was the author of a great race, although he had a final thrill that called his success into question.
The traffic found in the last part of the race and the excessive wear of the tires slowed his pace, allowing Marcus Ericsson to come back and undermine him to the end.
Newgarden, however, managed to resist this weekend and take home the first win of the season. Ericsson finished the race in second place, giving the best possible placement to the Ganassi team who, however, can console himself for having also brought home the third step of the podium.
Alex Palou led a solo race, having finished behind the top 2 by over 22 seconds. His performance, however, was embellished by an overcut that was perfectly successful against Alexander Rossi and Scott Dixon, thus managing to grab the podium.
Speaking of Dixon, the driver completed the hat-trick for the Ganassi team with fourth place ahead of the very first driver of the Andretti team, Alexander Rossi. The former F driver preceded Graham Rahal, Romain Grosjean and Pato O’Ward.
Unlucky race for Colton Herta. The driver of the Andretti team, 13th at the end, had a high chance of taking home the success. A refueling problem deprived him of the possibility and even made him retreat until he came out of the Top 10.
