Malukas, who had placed the Honda of Dale Coyne Racing 13a, came into contact with Santino Ferrucci’s car during the 90 ‘of practice.
On lap 32 of the session, Malukas got in the wake of the Dreyer & Reinbold Racing driver’s Chevrolet along the main straight, on the left side of the track. Ferrucci moved to the right, to take a more conventional trajectory at Turn 1 and Malukas joined him on the left.
However, as they both started to turn, Ferrucci’s left front wing end plate made contact with Malukas’s right rear tire. The Firestone deflated immediately and the car spun, hitting the outer wall at the exit of Turn 1, continuing along the barrier.
Malukas managed to get out without problems, while Ferrucci received a penalty for contact which forced him to skip the last 20 minutes of the session. Ferrucci admitted the error of assessment of the moment in which he could get back in the wake of his rival.
Worse went to Colton Herta, who had just completed 43 laps of the session, when his car skidded at Turn 1. The Andretti Autosport-Honda driver was partially able to control the vehicle, but then crashed into the barriers. .
On impact, the nose of the car was raised and the underlying air flow made it overturn, falling to the ground on the roll-bar and leaning on the edge of the aeroscreen, sliding for several meters.
At that moment, Herta reassured the team via radio, with his father Bryan warning him of the arrival of the commissioners reminding him not to break his belts. The driver then apologized to his team for the mistake.
The security team intervened within 10 seconds and gently put the car back on its wheels. Herta was seen and discharged from the in-house medical center and passed the first concussion test.
However, he has not yet received permission to get back into the car until the doctor learns from the IndyCar data download what the impact strength and speed was.
