Indoor plants The Christmas tree releases gas that can have a surprising effect on the flowers in your home – These are the things you need to know to keep your plants alive over the winter

Watering houseplants should be reduced during the dark season. Non-flowering plants do not need fertilizer in winter at all, a green plant expert advises.

In the dark the season can be made to pamper the houseplants of the home with special care to keep them refreshed in low light.

Indeed, many may now collapse their plants by over-watering and fertilizing. On the contrary, houseplants should be watered less frequently than usual during the darkest hours.

Non-flowering houseplants do not need fertilizer at all in winter, ie from about November to mid-February, reminds a horticultural and greenery expert Tiina Ikonen From the Martyrs’ Union.

“Plants need light, water, nutrients and heat to grow. If one of these is missing, it cannot be replaced by another, ”says Ikonen.

Plants produce oxygen and energy for growth.

“But a plant can’t connect any more if there is no light, even if it gets too much water. In other words, the plant will not be able to use additional commodities for growth, and over-irrigation is especially at risk during such a dark season. ”

Water at a reduced rate

Especially if the light cannot be increased, keep watering and thus reduce the heat, Ikonen advises. However, ordinary houseplants should not be kept dry, even in winter.

If the houseplant needs water for the rest of the season, for example once a week, it can be watered every week and a half during the dark season.

If the plants in your own home have been planted in a potting pot with a water tank, it is a good idea to let the tank go completely empty between additions of water, Ikonen advises.

“After that, you should try mold. Only when it feels dry at a depth of a couple of inches should you fill the tank. Often there is still moisture in the pot, even if it feels dry on the surface. ”

A plant that has received too little water is identified by a wilted state. The dried plant will not grow and may fall off the leaves.

A plant that has received too much water makes yellow leaves and can soften at the base. The pot feels heavy because of the water there.

The right kind watering should be remembered other than in winter. Ikonen advises that houseplants should be watered properly when watering them.

“So it’s a good idea to water the plants so that the roots get wet, so you prefer to give them a lot of water at a time, but less than a little at a time and more often.”

If the water is loosened a little at a time and often, the soil only gets wet from the surface, and the root system of the plant does not reach the entire soil, Ikonen explains.

Light from plant lights

Light the amount can be increased with different plant lamps and lights.

In ordinary lamps, the color temperature, or color tone, is low, or warm. The temperature of the yellow hue of an incandescent lamp is about 2,700 Kelvin. The higher the reading, the better for the plants.

“In plant lamps, the shade is usually around 4,000 Kelvin. LED daylight lamps with 5,000 Kelvin and a spectrum equivalent to natural light also appear to be on the market. These are suitable for plants, and the light is pleasing to the eyes. ”

Plant lamps often highlight the wavelengths of blue, red, and purple light because they are most beneficial to plants.

Plant light can be obtained as a separate lamp or as a lamp.

“Standard light bulbs are available with the standard E27 base, which is convenient to rotate in a home luminaire.”

If you have a bright light fixture for people at home, you can also try its benefits for houseplants, Ikonen says.

“In plant lights and bright light fixtures, the light is different from each other, but I personally noticed that last year’s poinsettia liked bright light and started growing towards the light.”

All the benefits out of the south window

If not wanting to put money in a plant lamp and there is no bright light in the home, you can try to maximize the amount of light the plants receive by moving the pots to the brightest part of the home for the winter, such as a window that often faces south.

It is worth opening the blinds for a day and partially moving the side curtains over the windows out of the way of light, Ikonen reminds.

“I would place the plants myself in a tight group on the windowsill or near the window. When plants are in a group, the air around them stays more humid than when they are placed over a wider area. Plants breathe all the time, from which moisture evaporates, and it also evaporates from the soil. ”

The room air is dry and the plants feel better when the air is wetter.

Ikonen advises that you can also take care of getting the light from your plants by wiping dust off the leaves regularly.

Six distant flowering plants

Soon many homes carry an authentic Christmas tree. Six emits ethylene, a gas that accelerates the spoilage of flowering plants and plants, for example.

Thus, the flowers placed next to the Christmas tree age prematurely. Some plants are more sensitive to it than others.

“So, for example, you shouldn’t put Christmas flowers right next to a spruce, and don’t place an apple basket next to the flowers, because apples also secrete a lot of ethylene.”
