Jakarta (AFP) – The Indonesian soccer stadium where 133 people were killed in a stampede in early October will be demolished and rebuilt, the country’s President Joko Widodo said on Tuesday.
Regarding the “Kanjuruhan stadium in Malang, we are going to demolish it and rebuild it according to FIFA regulations, with appropriate facilities that guarantee the safety of the players and fans,” President Joko Widodo told the press after meeting with the president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, visiting Jakarta.
The Fifa chief pledged on Tuesday to help transform Indonesian football to improve security, following their meeting at the presidential palace.
“We are going to reform and transform soccer in the country,” Infantino said. Indonesia will host the U-20 World Cup in 2023.
The balance of the tragedy rose to 133 people on Tuesday, after the death of a 33-year-old man who died of injuries sustained during the stampede.
More than 40 children died in the catastrophe, which Infantino described as “one of the darkest days for football”.
An invasion of the field of play that ended in tragedy
After Arema FC’s 3-2 loss against Persebaya Surabaya, two local teams, fans invaded the field to show their anger against players and officials.
The massive use of tear gas caused panic among the crowd and the exits were inaccessible or too narrow, resulting in many fans being suffocated or crushed to death.
Six people, including three policemen, were indicted and the regional police chief transferred to another destination.
