The Geophysical Center at the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, in the Indonesian region of Bandung, recorded 106 earthquakes in the province of West Java and surrounding areas last April. “Among the 106 earthquakes, the largest recorded earthquake had a magnitude of 6.5 and the smallest had a magnitude of 1.4,” said Tejuh Rahayu, head of the center, in Bandung on Saturday, according to the Indonesian “Antara News” news agency today.
Rahayo added that based on the epicenter distribution map, up to 70 earthquakes occurred in April 2024 at sea, due to active fracturing activities.
She added that the other 36 earthquakes were caused by the activity of the Indian-Australian tectonic plates. She added that “the earthquakes occurred at varying depths, ranging between 4 and 317 kilometers.”
It is noteworthy that Indonesia is located in the “Ring of Fire” region in the Pacific Ocean, where earthquakes are common.
An earthquake and tsunami in 2004 killed 226,000 people in 13 countries, including more than 120,000 in Indonesia, which has about 128 active earthquakes.
