Indian agricultural unions announced on Thursday (9) the official end of the protest campaign against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s failed land reform project, after a battle of more than a year.
Thousands of farmers remained camped for more than a year in the vicinity of New Delhi to protest against Modi’s land reform bill.
In mid-November, the prime minister announced the withdrawal of the project, but the farmers unions promised to continue with the protest until all their demands were met.
Among other things, they demanded minimum price guarantees for agricultural products and compensation for the families of hundreds of farmers who, they claim, died during the demonstrations.
The agrarian reform, approved in September 2020, authorized farmers to sell their produce to whomever they wished, rather than in state-controlled markets, which guaranteed a minimum subsistence price for some products.
Many small farm owners protested the laws in camps near New Delhi, given the risk, they said, of having to negotiate prices with big companies.
The government’s change of stance took place before elections in the states of Punjab, where many protesters come, and Uttar Pradesh, the country’s most populous with 220 million inhabitants.
This move was one of the biggest problems that Modi has had to face since coming to power in 2014.
Nearly two-thirds of India’s 1.3 billion people owe their livelihoods to agriculture, a sector that has always been a minefield for the political class and represents nearly 15% of the country’s GDP.
