India has recorded the first case of the MPOX clade 1 variant (formerly known as monkeypox) in the Asian country, prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a global emergency, which also marks the first case detected in South Asia.

“The clade 1b strain was found in a 38-year-old man from Malappuram district of Kerala (south) who tested positive last week,” official sources were quoted as saying by the Indian news agency. PTI.
The man was diagnosed with mpox on September 18 shortly after returning from the United Arab Emirates.
This would be the second case of the virus recorded in India since the start of the global emergency declared by the WHO. However, the authorities had not confirmed until now whether it was the new variant of the virus.
Although the Indian Government has not issued any communication in this regard, PTI reported that the Kerala Executive held a meeting to assess the overall situation in the state and announced plans to review its efforts on MPOX prevention and treatment.
Pakistan has so far recorded seven cases of mpox since the start of the health emergency, but They all correspond to clade 2, the lowest-risk variant of the virus.
India detected its first case of mpox on September 9 in a man who returned to New Delhi after having traveled to West Africa, also with the clade 2 variant.
Characteristics of the disease
The disease is characterized by flu-like symptoms and skin lesions. Although most cases are mild, it can be fatal for certain people, especially children, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems.
