India Indian farmers demolished their protest camp, which had lasted for more than a year

The prime minister refused to cancel the controversial law reform.

In India over the weekend, thousands of farmers have broken up their protest camp, which has been stationary for more than a year, outside the capital Delhi. At the same time, farmers have celebrated the fact that their protest paid off by firing fireworks and playing music.

Prime minister Narenda Modi last month bowed to repeal a law reform opposed by farmers. According to farmers, the law would have weakened their livelihoods and taken the profits into the hands of big business.

According to the government, the law reform was again necessary to modernize the agricultural sector and improve its competitiveness. A package of laws passed in September 2020 would have allowed private companies to operate in the agricultural sector.

Legal reform caused tens of thousands of farmers to protest the reform for a year.

“We were ready to demonstrate as long as it would take. But we are glad the government accepted our demand and we can return home, ”said the protester Sativinder Singh.

Of India’s 1.3 billion people, about two-thirds make their living through agriculture.
