India At least 19 people died and dozens were missing in Kerala, India after the floods

In India In the state of Kerala, at least 19 people have died and dozens are missing when heavy rains caused flooding in the area over the weekend.

The floods blocked the Kottayam area.

The Indian Armed Forces has assisted in the rescue efforts. On Sunday, the Indian Air Force said helicopters have delivered supplies and personnel to Kottayam.

There were still people missing on Sunday. Local residents in Kottayam on Sunday joined in searches of the missing under mud, rocks and fallen trees.

Floods are not uncommon in Kerala, but the area’s wetlands and lakes, which have previously prevented at least some of the flooding, have gradually disappeared as the area has become more populated.

In 2018, more than 400 people died, when Kerala was plagued by the worst floods in a hundred years.
