The test took place last night on the island of Abdul Kalam, in the Bay of Bengal (east coast of the country), as reported by the Defense Research and Development Organization, the country’s military research agency.
Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh held a “historical moment” that places the country within “a select group of nations that possess this advanced and essential military technology.”
The speed at which these missiles travel makes it extremely difficult to detect by radar systems and conventional air defense and, unlike ballistic missiles, do not follow a predetermined arcuate trajectory and can maneuver en route to their target.
China, the United States and Russia are at the forefront of a technology that Japan, Australia, France, Germany and North Korea are also developing.
