High fuel prices do crazy things to people. Although the price per liter between diesel and petrol is not that much different, one François Perrodo, the owner of a street-legal McLaren F1 GTR, decided as the ultimate act of desperation to see if his car could run on diesel. Surprise: it didn’t work. The converted race car worth more than 3 million euros had to be towed.
Just kidding, the owner didn’t fill up with diesel on purpose. On normal petrol cars, the diesel nozzle does not fit into the fuel filler neck, but because the McLaren F1 GTR is a race car, the opening is larger. The diesel nozzle at the gas station was blue, which was also the color of BP Ultimate. Perrodo didn’t know he had accidentally picked the wrong guy.
The McLaren F1 GTR drove a little bit with diesel in the tank
The McLaren F1 GTR ran for a short while on the petrol that was still in the tank and pipes, but then wouldn’t start again. Even McLaren whisperer Paul Lanzante couldn’t figure out what was wrong with the car. The car was towed. When Lanzante found out what was wrong with the GTR, he responded to the owner with understanding and nuance: “Mate, I’ve seen some really shocking things in my career, but you just took it to a whole new level.”
The damage to the McLaren F1 GTR by the diesel seems to be not too bad. To be safe, Lazante put a sticker above the filler opening with ‘François, no diesel!’. The owner also has a good laugh about it and he posts on his Instagram: ‘Obviously I have been suspended from la JER indefinitely since then and I have lost all my friends. Even that damn dog laughs at me when I get home! The road to salvation will be long and difficult, until then I am condemned to drive electric cars (and diesel) until the day I die.”
