Ukrainian political scientist Dmitry Korneychuk on Monday, November 1, on the air of the UkrLive TV channel, said that Kiev would be forced to “bow down” to Moscow and agree to any conditions of Gazprom because of the energy policy of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his predecessor Petro Poroshenko.
“The authorities deliberately – both Poroshenko and Zelensky – did nothing to ensure that we get rid of Russia from coal and gas dependence at least in some way. <...> Again, let’s bow to Moscow, “said Korneichuk.
The political scientist expressed doubt that both Ukrainian leaders, both current and former, have actually done anything for the country’s energy independence. Both have businesses in Russia, Korneichuk stressed, and pointed out that such a policy would lead to an extremely weak position of Kiev in possible negotiations with Gazprom.
“Because now, when we come to Gazprom, Gazprom can set any price for its gas, and we will have to agree,” the expert emphasized.
According to him, in a maximum of a month, Ukraine will be forced to start negotiations with Russia on direct gas purchases.
On November 1, the price of gas in Europe at the close of trading was able to win back the daily fall and rose to $ 816 per 1 cubic meter. m.
Earlier, on October 29, the head of the operator of the gas transmission system (GTS) of Ukraine Serhiy Makogon was outraged by the data on the profit of the Russian energy company Gazprom. According to him, from January to September 2021, the company received an “absolute record of net profit” at the expense of European consumers.
On the same day, the deputy of the Verkhovna Rada Lyudmila Buimister said that the import of electricity from Russia and Belarus “kills” the energy system of Ukraine. According to her, a catastrophic situation is currently observed in the energy sector in Ukraine, with which the authorities intend to justify the need to import electricity from Russia and Belarus. This outcome was the result of a failure in the process of storing coal reserves and the lack of support from local mining enterprises, the deputy is convinced.
On October 28, the former Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk said that the purchase of electricity from Russia and Belarus is a sabotage, leading to the loss of the country’s energy independence. In his opinion, the authorities have completely failed the preparations for the heating season.
A day earlier, Ukrenergo reported that eight Ukrainian companies bought 2,200 MW of available capacity for importing electricity from Russia in November. According to the data provided by the company, from November 1, Ukraine will resume importing electricity from Belarus as well. It was clarified that the state-owned company Energoatom bought the section for importing electricity in November from Belarus with a capacity of 885 out of 900 available megawatts.
On the same day, the deputy of the Verkhovna Rada, Mikhail Volynets, called on the citizens of Ukraine to stock up on manure due to the lack of energy resources in the country. According to him, a massive closure of social facilities is forecasted in the country. In such conditions, Ukrainians can only rely on themselves, the politician emphasized.
Prior to that, on October 20, the National Federation of Employers of Ukraine issued a statement in which it called the catastrophic situation on the energy resource markets in the country. The federation stressed that in 2021 there was a huge increase in the cost of energy resources and the price of gas for Ukrainian enterprises became 4-5 times higher than that of their competitors.
At the end of December 2019, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy banned the import of electricity from Russia under bilateral agreements. Thus, Kiev sought control over energy prices in the domestic market and increased competition in this area.
