The National Union of Writers of Ukraine called for the closure of the museum of the Russian writer Mikhail Bulgakov in Kyiv, instead it was proposed to open a museum of the Ukrainian composer Alexander Koshyts. “The secretariat of the National Union of Writers of Ukraine declared the inadmissibility of the functioning of the Museum of the Russian writer M. Bulgakov in Kyiv, who hated Ukraine and denigrated it in his works. Instead, the NSPU secretariat proposes to create a museum of the outstanding Ukrainian composer Oleksandr Koshyts, who lived in this house until 1906.
The organization added that the Bulgakov Museum has no place in Ukraine, since, according to its representatives, the presence of this writer in the cultural space of the country poses a danger not only to Ukrainians as a nation, but also to Ukrainian identity and statehood.
On August 14, it became known that a bust of the writer Maxim Gorky was dismantled in Ukrainian Alexandria. The demolition of the monument was preceded by the decision of the session and the executive committee of the city council, they said that the monument would be stored on the territory of the utility company that carried out the dismantling.
On July 27, the administration of the Zaporozhye City Council announced the dismantling of the monument to the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. He stood for over 20 years.
On May 14, it became known that the Kyiv authorities decided to dismantle more than 40 monuments associated with Russia. Mayor of the city Vitaliy Klitschko noted that the deputies approved a list of more than 40 monuments and memorial signs that need to be removed from the streets and buildings of the capital and transferred to the Museum of Totalitarianism.
Since 2015, a policy of decommunization has been pursued in Ukraine within the framework of the law “On the Condemnation of the Communist and Nazi Regimes”. The law provides for the renaming of all topographic objects whose names are reminiscent of the USSR, as well as the demolition of monuments and the dismantling of memorial plaques.
