On the occasion of World Cancer Day, which is celebrated on February 4, the ‘Pink Positive’ project by Daiichi Sankyo Italy is enriched bymultimedia contributions and two podcasts dedicated to nutrition and music therapy, thanks to the collaboration of Smartfood – European Institute of Oncology (IEO) in Milan and the Edo Fund and Elvo Tempia.
Born in 2020 as a free eBook that is constantly updated and dedicated in particular to women who are facing a cancer diagnosis – explains the company in a note – the site Pinkpositive.it today collects 26 chapters written by leading Italian experts who examine the issues of everyday life of cancer patients, from nutrition, to femininity up to the management of pain and anxiety, always with an eye to the future and with the adamant goal of counteracting false myths and fake news.
Podcasts were born from two of these chapters ‘The voice of nutrition’ and ‘Music therapy’which put the elements of a healthy lifestyle at the center of the treatment path which must no longer be considered only in the fundamental role it plays in the primary prevention of diseases, but also as a great ally in the phases following a diagnosis, especially when it concerns an oncological disease, which affects not only the body, but every sphere of a person’s life.
In the 12 episodes of the podcast ‘The voice of nutrition – Pink Positive Edition’, the experts of Smartfood Ieo, in partnership with the Ieo-Monzino Foundationfinally clarify the evidence concerning the relationship between nutrition and canceran issue widely debated in the scientific field in recent years, but also sometimes communicated in a confused and imprecise way, so much so that they often become false myths or real fake news.
“This project – explains the nutritionist and researcher Lucilla Titta, coordinator of the IEO Smartfood project – increasingly embodies the soul of Pink Positive for the simplicity, usefulness and completeness of the messages. By listening to the podcasts, patients can receive clear and reliable information on nutrition and lifestyle in a context, that of the Internet, which is often confusing. Our intention is precisely to help patients to extricate themselves in this area and to make healthy and informed choices”.
In the podcasts, included in the ‘Nutrition’ section of the site, the Smartfood experts also provide a great deal of practical advice, for example on how to read food labels when shopping and understand which products to avoid, how to consume more foods of plant origin and healthy bones, how to hydrate better and how to select fats, but above all how to cook in a healthy way and conceive ‘smart’ dishes for the whole day, from breakfast to dinner. From mid-February this section will also host various video recipes for making healthy and tasty ‘smart’ dishes.
In the field of oncology the music therapyto which an entire chapter of the eBook is dedicated – continues the company note – aims to improve the quality of life of patients, their families and caregivers, in the various stages of diagnosis and treatment, relieving symptoms and reducing negative emotions, thus promoting resilience and communication. In the ‘Music’ section of Pink Positive it is possible to listen to three podcasts in which the expert music therapists of the Tempia Foundation explain the nature of music therapy: its birth, its functions, scientific evidence and applications in the clinical field. In the same section there are also 7 playlists built around various musical genres and selected by musicians and experts to give well-being, according to the musical sensitivity and tastes of each individual.
“In the literature – underlines Francesca Crivelli, coordinator of clinical research in oncology and of the specialization Master for music therapists promoted by the Tempia Foundation – it is amply demonstrated how listening to music can reduce the intensity of oncological pain, lower blood pressure levels, reduce heart rate and stress levels. Music in fact arouses neurohormonal reactions in our brain, such as the stimulation of the nucleus accumbens, the brain center of pleasure, or the production of prolactin and endogenous opioid peptides, responsible for an anesthetic, analgesic and also consolatory. And let us also remember that conscious and unconscious mental events, the result of habits, lifestyles, exposure to different environments and behaviors, can modulate gene expression in our cells, through different mechanisms of epigenetic expression”.
The Edo Tempia Fund, thanks to the unconditional support of Daiichi Sankyo Italia, opens up the possibility for everyone to experience music therapy virtually, by participating in an online meeting that can be booked by email at [email protected]
