A group of 10 Brazilians entered the Olympic Stadium to participate in four competitions in the opening of another day of athletics at the Olympiad in Tokyo (Japan) on Monday night (2).
However, none of them managed to advance to the medal disputes. In the 1500 meters (m), Brazilian Thiago André finished his heat in 13th place, with a time of 3min47s71, and was eliminated. “The race is very tough, there is a lot of physical contact, even better qualifying. There were many touches, I had a stomp on my foot that hurts a lot, but it wasn’t a reason to leave the race. But in the last fall, the athlete from Qatar, I had to leave the track and there was a camera, I had to stop and then come back. I don’t know if it was an event or a boxing ring. As I didn’t do well in the 800 m, I went in today to relax, do my best and gain experience for the next cycle”, declared the athlete to the Olympic Committee of Brazil (COB).
In the triple jump event, Brazil had the participation of three athletes. In group A, Alexsandro Melo, after jumping 15.65 m at the first opportunity, got injured and abandoned the race. In the same key, Mateus de Sá managed 16.49 m. In group B, Almir Júnior did not exceed 16.27 m and was also eliminated in the initial phase.
“I’m happy, proud, I started the race well, in the first jump I did 16.49 m. I think there was a lack of tranquility when I saw that I was there in the fight. I had to jump to improve my brand. Now we end the Tokyo cycle, the Paris cycle begins, and I’m sure I’ll arrive mature, better prepared”, declared Mateus Sá.
Tiffani Marinho represented Brazil in the 400 m dash. With a time of 52s11, she came out strong and was among the top three, who advance directly, but lost her breath and finished fifth, and did not move forward in the tournament.
Jucilene Lima, in javelin throw, scored 60.14 m, finishing in 6th position in Group A. In bracket B, Brazilian Laila Ferrer took 10th position with 59.47 m. The pair were eliminated in the first phase.
In the 200 m dash, Jorge Vides finished the first heat in fourth place with 20s94. “The result was not what was expected. I’ve been training really hard. I didn’t turn out the way I should have, and my forte is the end of the race. Because I didn’t accelerate well, I couldn’t get out of the curve for a stronger straight, but now it’s time to think about the relay, as we have a chance for a medal”, commented the sprinter. In the third heat, Aldemir Júnior did only 20s84. In the fifth series, Lucas Vilar made 21s31, finishing in sixth place. The green and yellow trio failed to move forward.
