In an unexpected turn during the debate of mayoral candidates Álvaro Obregón, Esther Mejía Bolañoscandidate for Citizen movementreported having been a victim of political gender violence by her own party and announced her decline in favor of Morena.
During the debate organized by the Electoral Institute of Mexico City, the candidates Lía Limón and Javier Lopez Casarin Strong criticism and attacks were launched at each other. However, the most notable moment was the intervention of Esther Mejía Bolaños, who took advantage of her final turn to make a forceful statement.
In his speech, Mejía Bolaños detailed his experience of political violence, pointing out that for weeks he had been the subject of harassment and reprisals within the Citizen Movement.
“Today I publicly announce that I am joining the project of Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum, the project of Clara Brugada and I am also joining the project of my friend Javier, who also know that you will be able to build together with me everything that I committed to,” he declared. Mejia.
The candidate had already shown her previous support for Sheinbaum, arguing a lack of backing and support from the Citizen Movement in her candidacy. This second decline reaffirms her position and her commitment to Morena’s ideals and projects.
The debate, which took place in an environment of high expectation, also served as a setting for the citizens of Álvaro Obregón to learn about the proposals and visions of the candidates in a context of high political competitiveness.
Citizen Movement distances itself from Esther Mejía
Meanwhile, in a statement, the orange party pointed out that Esther Mejía Bolaños no longer represents the Citizen Movement, after what it called “her evident and notorious support for the candidates Clara Brugada, for Mexico City, and Claudia Sheinbaum in the race presidential”.
He pointed out that on May 5, Mejía Bolaños publicly expressed his support for the Morena candidates, for which the Citizen Movement immediately asked him to resign by mutual agreement.
He argued that the defense of said political projects is incompatible with the essence of his candidacy.
“However, Álvaro Obregón has refused to resign from his candidacy for mayor even though his support for another party has become evident, which results in a total lack of ethics to step aside and be able to replace his candidacy by someone who has the firm commitment to represent the Citizen Movement in a serious way,” he said.
Movimiento Ciudadano warned that it requested the Electoral Institute to postpone today’s debate between the Álvaro Obregó mayoral candidates, but the IECM did not speak out, “which was counterproductive for equity in the race and, consequently, for the democratic integrity of the process”.
“In that sense, Movimiento Ciudadano completely distances itself from C. Esther Mejía Bolaños, so her sayings, positions and declarations expressed in the debate, in addition to the comments that she could use in the different spaces of the media, for which do not represent the ideology, values, agendas and objectives that the Citizen Movement has built,” he said.
