América-MG remained alive in the fight for a place in the next Libertadores and further complicated Grêmio’s delicate situation in the Brazilian Championship. This Saturday (13), Coelho defeated Tricolor by 3-1 at Independência, in Belo Horizonte, in the 32nd round of the competition.
The miners rose to 44 points, in eighth position, three points behind Corinthians, sixth place and last team in the classification zone for the South American competition. The Gauchos, stationed at 29 points, in 19th place, in the relegation zone, are seven points behind Bahia, 16th and first team outside the Z4. The difference could rise to nine points in the sequence of the round if the Bahia and São Paulo win their respective commitments.

The hosts were quick to come out ahead. On minute three, midfielder Ademir threw Felipe Azevedo behind the Grêmio defense. The forward completed the departure of goalkeeper Brenno and opened the scoring. The assistant indicated an offside in the move, but the video referee (VAR) warned that the position was legal and the goal was validated.
On minute 41, forward Elias shared with goalkeeper Matheus Cavichioli and the tricolors complained a lot about the penalty, but nothing was given. Afterwards, Ademir was hit by the lateral Cortez in the area and the penalty was awarded. The midfielder himself knocked and converted.
On the way back from the break, Coelho made the third in the first minute. Alê dominated on the left, crossed low to the rear and also defensive midfielder Juninho kicked with the first kick. Grêmio cashed at nine, in an individual play by Ferreira. The forward advanced through the middle, faced the marking of four players and submitted in Matheus Cavichiolli’s corner. The Gauchos tried to reduce the damage, but América kept the confrontation under control.
Tricolor will seek rehabilitation on Tuesday (16), at 6 pm (GMT), at the Arena, in Porto Alegre. On Wednesday (17), at 7pm, América will face Atlético-GO, again at Independência. The duels are valid for the 33rd round.
In the match that opened the round, Atlético-GO and Santos did not start from scratch at the Antônio Accioly stadium, in Goiânia. The result was not good for anyone, as both try to get rid of the risk of relegation. The Dragon is in 14th place, with 38 points, one less than the Fish, which appears in 11th. Both can move down positions in the table, but follow outside the Z4.
Goias have America ahead of them in the next round. The São Paulo natives will also return to the field on Wednesday, at 7 pm, to face the already relegated Chapecoense, in Vila Belmiro, in Santos (SP).
