The law of Ukraine on the state language is based on “affectionate Ukrainization”. The Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language of the Republic Taras Kremen told about this in interview the publication “Today”.
He noted that one of the tasks of the Ukrainian state is to create better conditions for free communication of the country’s residents.
According to Kremen, those who can communicate in this way will have access to educational, informational, medical and government servants.
At the same time, the ombudsman complained that “Russian propaganda” made him a “linguistic inquisitor” and a “punisher” resorting to “unthinkable actions.”
Earlier, Taras Kremen called the Ukrainian language “the code of the nation”, and its use in all spheres of public life is a tribute to the people of Ukraine. He asked opponents of Ukrainization to leave the country.
In July 2019, the law “On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as a state language” came into force in Ukraine. The document made its use mandatory for state and local authorities, educational institutions, hospitals, the service sector and the media.
In July 2021, the Constitutional Court (CC) of the country recognized the norms of the law as legitimate and obliged all citizens of the republic to speak Ukrainian without exception. At the same time, the profile committee of the Verkhovna Rada rejected amendments to the document, which assumed the return of education in Russian and the abolition of fines for violating language legislation.
