In the Ecuadorian Amazon, the victims of oil spills have decided to turn the environmental disaster they have experienced for decades into tourism. Guiding visitors through torches, oil wells and other contaminated sites is his way of raising awareness of the ecocide that occurred in the region.
Some call it the ‘Chernobyl of the Amazon’. Between 1972 and 1990 in the northeast of the country, the US oil company Chevron (then Texaco) caused irreversible damage to biodiversity and local communities. Since then, several Ecuadorian companies have continued to extract oil in the region, with nearly 1,000 oil wells currently active. Report from our correspondent Thomas Nicolon.
