Ukraine commemorated the 80th anniversary of the Babi Yar massacre, in the suburbs of Kiev, where in 1941 the Nazis shot tens of thousands of people including Jews, Gypsies, Ukrainian nationalists and other minorities. There a new and gigantic commemorative complex of this massacre will be built, a project of more than 100 million dollars, financed in large part by Russian oligarchs close to President Vladimir Putin, which has generated discontent in part of the population.
Some in Ukraine frown on this project, due to the Russian investment it entails, against the background of the ongoing war with pro-Russian separatist forces in the east of the country. Some critics even fear that Moscow is trying to rewrite history. Report from our correspondent Gulliver Cragg.
