First modification:
After testing more than 800,000 children, the World Health Organization now recommends the use of the malaria vaccine. Effective against one of the parasites that transmit the disease, the vaccine reduces the risk of severe forms of the disease by 30%, enough to save tens of thousands of lives. Malaria kills around 400,000 people each year, the vast majority of whom are children under the age of five.
Put to the test in Malawi, Ghana and Kenya, where it continues to be used and studied, the vaccine has raised many hopes. Combined with other methods, it could dramatically reduce the number of people who get sick each year. Some scientists even hope they can curb the epidemic.
