During the past year, the Urban Guard of Barcelona came to put 4,152 fines for parking the motorcycle on the sidewalks in which it is forbidden to do so. As the large number of motorcycles circulating in the Catalan capital does not fall, the Consistory has decided … to increase the sections of sidewalk where you cannot park. Pedestrians win, they lose motorcyclists.
The intention of the Barcelona City Council is that the vast majority of vehicles of this type are on the road. And that the sidewalks “are mainly pedestrian”, in the words of the first deputy mayor, Laia Bonet. And it is that the Barcelona town hall intends to “print a change of culture” so that motorcycles do not end up parked anywhere in a narrow sidewalk, bothering pedestrians.
The new mobility ordinance, in force since February 1, is the one that collects all those sections of sidewalk where you cannot park. In fact, the small print of the Ordinance explains in detail that it is prohibited to leave the motorcycle in spaces adjacent to bicycle parking lots, pedestrian fords, bike lanes and when the use of containers is obstructed.
Schools and hospitals
Another decisions of the City Council is to somehow prioritize a good part of the prohibitions of parking on the sidewalks close to 59 schools and 12 hospitals, so Now, in total, there are 325 sections around 296 schools and 29 in different hospitals where a motorcycle cannot be parked. The claim of the City Council is that before December 31 there are 245 more sections where the same prohibition will fall.
To all these numbers we must add those streets in which the sidewalks measure less than three meters wide. That is, streets in which by default it is forbidden to park a motorcycle without having to check whether or not there is a sign of forbidden parking.
And where to park? While it comes to raising awareness among motorcyclists, from the City Council they also intend to generate places to leave motorcycles. The planned figure for 2030 is 40,000 places. Although for now what there is a real figure: Malto Malo parked … Fine between 50 and 100 euros.
