Australia has defined the koala as an endangered species. It is estimated that they could be extinct by 2050 if nothing is done. Wildfires, drought, deforestation, disease and other threats are devastating koalas, BBC News reported. The species has been deemed “vulnerable” in two Australian states, Queensland and New South Wales.

Environment Minister Sussan Ley said the “authorities are working out a recovery plan” and that certain habitats will be subject to an assessment for “impacts on species”. The minister made a point of highlighting that “koala conservation” is “a priority”.
According to BBC News, a 2021 survey from New South Wales indicated that koalas could be extinct even before 2050 unless there is immediate intervention.
The 2019-20 Black Summer wildfires, a vast array of devastating fires that raged in Australia, are estimated to have killed 5,000 koalas and affected 24% of habitats in New South Wales alone. , currently, only about 50 thousand marsupial koalas.
“Koalas have gone from unlisted to vulnerable and endangered in just 10 years, a surprisingly rapid decline,” says WWF-Australia scientist Stuart Blanch.
Scientists warn that climate change will exacerbate forest fires and drought. If the recovery plan is put into practice, Australian governments are legally obliged not to make decisions that are incompatible with the conservation of the species, however there is no obligation to adopt the plan in the first instance, reports the British newspaper The Guardian.
