In a meeting with the head of government claudia sheinbaum and members of the Megalopolis Environmental Commission (CAMe), experts asked to reduce the effect of heat islands in order to prevent future environmental contingencies.
As Sheinbaum announced this Thursday, the meeting with atmospheric specialists from the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate Change of the UNAM to find out the reason why environmental contingencies are activated more frequently lately, as well as to analyze possible additional measures to reduce them.
After the meeting, the head of CDMX explained that the researchers urged to mitigate the heat islands that are produced by the replacement of natural soil with materials that retain heat, such as asphalt and brick.

“Both climate change itself and the increase in the heat island phenomenon that refers to the warming that exists due to the number of streets that absorb heat, the asphalt of the street (…) the highest temperatures have increased, yes before we got to 25 degreestoday we are reaching 30 degrees of temperature, that contributes to the formation of ozone.
“We were told in other parts of the world that painting roofs in light colors would help lower temperatures,” Sheinbaum said.
Likewise, the experts pointed out that contamination increased during the pandemic due to the increase in the use of Cleaning products and of LP gaswhich are generators of chemical compounds, which form the ozone.

While the meeting took place hours before the CAMe suspended the second ozone contingency of the week, with which the metropolis spent six consecutive days of ozone emergency.
Similarly, Sheinbaum’s announcement came after users on social networks reminded him when in 2017 he questioned the authorities of the megalopolis for a prolonged contingency.
