Cuba is witnessing the largest mass exodus to the United States in decades after a series of economic hits that have worsened electricity shortages and blackouts.
Border officials have encountered about 178,000 people fleeing the communist-ruled island of 11 million people so far this fiscal year, according to US government data through July.
Most migrants make their journey overland after leaving the country for other countries in Latin America that do not require visas to enter.
According to a news release issued by the Center for Democracy in the Americas, “the current wave of Cuban immigrants has officially surpassed the two previous largest waves of Cuban immigration to the United States, the Mariel exodus in 1980 and the Balcero crisis in 1994, combined.”
