He was called Giuseppe Stilo, the 35-year-old man originally from Filogaso (Vibo Valentia), who died on Wednesday 17 April after falling ill on board Ryanair flight FR8780 which left Turin Caselle and headed to Lamezia Terme airport. Stilo was traveling with his wife, with whom he lived in the Cuneo area, and the couple were heading towards Stilo's home town.
Stilo's illness occurred halfway through the journey and the pilot decided to return to Boxes to allow doctors to intervene. Despite resuscitation attempts, unfortunately Stilo died on board the plane. His wife, struck by the tragedy, fell ill and was taken to hospital to receive treatment: they had married the previous year.
The man, passionate about spiritual activities and much loved by friends, was known for his kindness and his smile. The words of one Her friend on Facebook testify to the great esteem towards him:
«Giuseppe, how many moments we shared, to organize diocesan meetings, to talk about spiritual journeys for young people, but also just to share important moments of our lives»
ASL To4 denied any delay in rescue operations in Stilo, confirming that the doctors on board immediately began cardio-pulmonary resuscitation maneuvers using the defibrillator semi-automatic present on the plane. Upon landing, at 11:30 in the morningthe medical staff on duty at the airport emergency room continued the rescue operations, but unfortunately it was not possible to save Stilo's life.
The response from the Turin ASL
“Due to a passenger's illness, the aircraft headed for Lamezia Terme returned to Turin with an emergency procedure – the health company explains – while on board the aircraft two doctors on the flight began resuscitation”.
The ASL underlined that the 118 ambulance coming from Borgaro Torinese was waiting at the gate and entered the airport immediately once the plane landed.
It should be noted that the first ambulance with the volunteers was waiting at the gate and took about 2 minutes to access the airport grounds (in the meantime the patient had three doctors with a defibrillator and adrenaline who were assisting him) while the 118 medical team entered immediately
All the efforts of the doctors and healthcare personnel on board and on land were unfortunately not enough to save Giuseppe Stilo's life, leaving the community and his family shocked by his premature death.
