The delegation of the Generalitat of Catalonia in Brussels has today invited the former president of the Generalitat Carles Puigdemont and the former Minister of Health and MEP, Toni Comín, both fugitives from Justice, to the reception given to the president Salvador Illa in the same delegation in the European capital. Neither Puigdemont nor Comín attended. Yes, however, the also fugitive former Minister of Culture Lluís Puiga member of former President Puigdemont’s Government in 2017, who greeted Illa and had a brief exchange of words. They both looked excited.
According to Executive sources consulted by ABC, the event has been organized by the Delegation of the Generalitat to the EUand the Catalan colony in the Belgian capital was invited, as is usually done. It was not considered appropriate to remove people required by Justice from that list. Government sources added that Puigdemont and Comin were invited in their capacity as deputies in the Parliament of Catalonia. The same sources indicated that at no time had a meeting with Puigdemont nor with the former councilors Comín and Puig.
Illa, a few days ago, assured that she did not rule out meeting Puigdemont, but “whenever it’s time.” In response, Puigdemont reproached him for having traveled to Brussels and not planning to meet with him, unlike what he has done with the other former presidents of the Generaltat, which in his opinion is a sign of his “political resistance to applying the amnesty». «Although he has already met with the rest of the former presidents of the Generalitat, President Illa believes that it is not time to meet with me now. Today and tomorrow he is in Brussels, a few kilometers from where I have lived for seven years, as a result of the repression that he and his party enthusiastically supported. But consider that it is not necessary that we meet in the Government delegation to the EU. His attitude is a speech, perfectly understandable (…) The message has been received and we will not insist any more. It’s not that he doesn’t play, it’s that he doesn’t want to,” lamented Puigdemont.
Yesterday, the elected Junts MEP Toni Comín also spoke, for whom the president of the Generalitat “Making it clear that he has come to reconcile, he has come to divide the Catalans.” «For him, October 1 does not exist, 9N does not exist, President Puigdemont acts as if it did not exist. This president has renounced representing half of the Catalans. In this subtle way he exercises the presidency in a clearly divisive way,” he noted in an interview on Catalunya Ràdio.
Days before, Illa reiterated that if it were her will, the meeting would have already taken place. “My wish is that Puigdemont was already in Catalonia and we could have met,” he said at an event of the Godó Group, expressing, as on other occasions, his displeasure at the fact that the amnesty could not be applied to the former catalan presidentwith whom he spoke by phone on the day of his inauguration after his call. Later, in Ser, Illa pointed out that she has respect for him “as a person and as a political leader” despite having “very distant political positions.” Illa demanded in that same interview, “out of deep respect” for the Judiciary, “the agile and undelayed application” of the Amnesty Law, arguing that it has been endorsed by Congress with a majority and that it is a measure “good for Catalonia and Spain. “From there, when the time comes, I am going to meet with Mr. Puigdemont, but when it is time,” clarified the Catalan president.
Yesterday’s photo with Puig marked the last day of Illa’s two-day visit to Brussels, where she has tried to make visible the return of the Generalitat to the European stage after the ostracism of the ‘procés’ years.
