Ilkay Gundogan is not expected to entertain any transfer offers this summer, although FC Barcelona are still willing to sell the 33-year-old if a tempting proposal comes along.
Gundogan joined the Catalan club last summer, having captained Manchester City to a treble of the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League. He contributed 19 goals and assists in 51 games in all competitions and was the most reliable midfielder in the squad.
But Barcelona’s financial constraints have led to a high turnover of players in recent years and Gundogan has been linked with an exit, even at his age and with another season (and potentially a third) remaining on his contract with the club.
According to Sports worldGundogan, through his agent and uncle, Ilhan, has informed Barcelona that he does not wish to receive offers from any other club.
The reason is that he is happy in the city and has the ambition to leave his mark on the club by achieving something “big.” Barcelona’s position had been to consider the offers presented by Gundogan’s entourage if all parties considered it appropriate.
Gundogan is said to be a target for Jose Mourinho at Fenerbahce in Turkey, partly due to the injury suffered by former Manchester United midfielder Fred. The Istanbul giants have not lost ambition in the transfer market as they look to reassert domestic dominance after last season marked a full decade without a Super League title, amid six second-place finishes in that time.
Barcelona look set to add attacking midfielder Dani Olmo to their ranks. A deal is believed to have been agreed with RB Leipzig for €55m plus €7m in add-ons. Pedri should be back for the start of La Liga, but Gavi may not be at full fitness until 2025 and Frenkie de Jong has been left out of the squad for the pre-season tour due to a long-standing ankle problem.
