The mayor of Ilhabela, Toninho Colucci (PL), announced on Friday, 5, that he will publish a decree next week extinguishing the mandatory use of masks in open spaces. As disclosed by his office, the mayor considers that the pandemic is under control in the city and he wants Ilhabela “100% normal” for the summer season. The measure contravenes a state decree that requires the use of face shield against the transmission of covid-19, under penalty of fine. The government of São Paulo is considering releasing the use of masks only in December.
For Colucci, the actions of the administration in confronting covid-19 allow for the new advance. “People on the streets are no longer wearing masks with the same frequency, as they know that the pandemic in the city is under control: 92% of the population is vaccinated with the first dose and 82% with the second dose,” he said. He said the last death from the disease in the city was recorded in September. “It’s been more than 40 days without hospitalizations for the coronavirus,” said the mayor.
According to him, the decree will be published as soon as the Covid-19’s confrontation committee analyzes the data related to the pandemic and presents them to the Public Ministry. If there is a publication, Ilhabela will be the first city in São Paulo to allow the use of the mask. “We are among the three cities with more than 30,000 inhabitants that have been vaccinated the most in the state of São Paulo and we are the one with the least per capita deaths from the disease in Brazil”, he highlighted.
Mask release will apply to open spaces. Face shields will continue to be mandatory in restaurants, public transport, health facilities and schools. With the resumption of economic activities, the mayor predicts the city will be 100% normal for the summer season. “We live off tourism, it is our industry, which generates jobs and income for our population. Returning to normality means offering our visitors what they have not enjoyed in the last two years”, he said.
The state secretary for Regional Development, Marco Vinholi, who is part of the Covid combat committee, said that the requirement remains in force throughout the state and that the rule is based on data on the disease throughout the state territory. “City Halls must follow the rules defined for the entire state. Failure to wear a mask in public places provides for a fine to be applied by the Sanitary Surveillance”, he said. The fine is R$ 552.71, and may reach R$ 5,294.38 for the establishment.
