The 12h of Bathurst officially returns in 2022 as the first round of the Intercontinental GT Challenge.
After two years of absence due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the Mount Panorama race will finally take place, but compared to what was communicated by the local promoter and SRO Motorsports some time ago, the date changes.
The calendar of the series in fact provided for the Australian trip in mid-March of next season, but on that same date there are already the FIA WEC and IMSA races in Sebring, so it would have been very hard to have teams and drivers.
Hence, the weekend of 25-27 February was chosen to compete in the legendary ocean race, as the experts explain delightedly.
“The 12h of Bathurst has become one of the favorite events of the motorsport scene both in Australia and around the world – says Shane Howard, director of operations of Supercars – Held on Mount Panorama, the heart of Australian motorsport, the race is one of the most popular. on the GT racing calendar and is held in high regard by some of the best teams and brands globally. “
“The event team will work to provide a memorable experience for those attending the track and we are very excited to have set a date to bring the event back next February.”
Stéphane Ratel, founder and CEO of SRO Motorsports, added: “Bathurst has always been the season opener of the championship, it has an atmosphere like no other event, and is rightfully considered one of the great endurance races in the world.”
“The IGTC teams, drivers and Constructors have undoubtedly played a part in amplifying this status, and I am looking forward to returning to Australia in 2022. Maintaining the traditional February start date of the event was not an option. viable, but after consulting teams, Case and Supercars it became clear that it was necessary to find an alternative weekend in March, when the championships in Australia, Europe and America begin. “
“I think we have found a good balance between everyone, which also allows us to keep an important element of what makes Bathurst special.”
