IGN has purchased the English publishing group Gamer Network, which includes sites such as Eurogamer, GamesIndustry.biz, VG247, Rock Paper Shotgun and Dicebreaker. As a result of the acquisition, some layoffs were made.
In addition to the publications just listed, the Gamer Network owns shares of sites such as Digital FoundryOutside Xbox and the Hookshot network, which in turn includes Nintendo Life, PushSquare, PureXbox and Time Extension.
However, they are not included in the acquisition EGX and MCM events, as well as the digital brand Popverse, which remains owned by ReedPop. In any case, it is a sensational operation if we consider the colossus that emerges from it.
IGN Entertainment already owns IGN, MapGenie, HowLongToBeat and Humble Bundle.
Does the acquisition trend also conquer the press?
In recent years we have seen numerous acquisitions of development teams and publishers, with the latest and most notable being Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard for approximately 70 billion dollars.
Evidently that type of operation also inspired IGN Entertainment, which wanted this investment consolidate its position internationallybecoming one of the main players in the sector.
The other side of the coin is unfortunately represented by the aforementioned layoffswith some now former Gamer Network collaborators who have begun to publish adverts on social media in order to find new employment.
