Did you happen to see a photo of a man wearing a shirt on the web enamel on just one fingernail? Did you know that that gesture hides a very deep meaning? Even beloved actor Zac Efron chose to take part. Let's find out what it is.
It all started with Elliot Costello in 2013, an Australian social entrepreneur who chose to visit an orphanage in Cambodia. That day, the man met a little girl named Thea. She was 10 years old and was in that facility because for two years she had suffered physical and psychological abuse and the wound in her soul was clearly visible in Elliot's eyes.
Thea was a happy little girl, her mom and dad loved her more than anything. However, her life changed after her father passed away. Her mother fell into depression and a difficult economic situation. Not being able to take care of her daughter, she decided to lock her up in an orphanage. Unfortunately, however, things did not go as the woman had expected, no family arrived to make her little girl happy.
Thea came abused by the director of the orphanage for two years. Finally, when the horrible truth came out, it came transferred in another orphanage in Cambodia. Elliot was impressed by that 10-year-old girl, because despite what she had been through she was the only one who spread joy and positivity. She always had nail polish on her nails and that day he convinced the businessman to get a nail painted.
We talked about her past and as she painted one of my nails, I promised her that I would always keep it that way, to remember her and to spread her suffering.
That meeting changed Elliot's life. The entrepreneur has given life to a movement, the Polished Manaddressed to all men. The latter paint a nail on their hand to show theirs support to all little girls like Thea. That one painted finger represents one in five children who will be a victim of abuse.
He chose to spread this message to men, because according to statistics they are the ones responsible for the harm that is done to these children and therefore they must become “change“. Lots of celebrities, just like Zac Efron, have joined this beautiful initiative. Polished Man has become an association that today fights to create a better world for abused children and to offer psychological support.
