When you dream while you sleep, in those moments your mind is sifting through your memories, thoughts and feelings, alerting you to physical problems that you don’t notice.
Most people realize that dreams are a window into our state of consciousness, and fewer realize that dreams shed light on many aspects of our physical health.
Experts at the Sleep Cycle Center, which is based in Texas, say that a person’s dreams may be able to alert him about a potential danger during sleep.
And the interpretation of this, according to experts, is that the brain in those moments is preoccupied with “unconscious” processing of physical symptoms, and thus this is reflected in dreams.
The center stated that if a person notices the recurrence of these dreams or nightmares, this means that it is time to contact the doctor to assess the situation.
He pointed out that some dreams or nightmares may be a sign of sleep apnea.
Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common symptom of obstructive sleep apnea, affecting 18 million American adults.
It occurs when the throat muscles intermittently relax and block the airway during sleep. A noticeable sign of obstructive sleep apnea is snoring.
Although experts say that sufferers of this problem do not realize it, they assert that dreams or nightmares can alert people about the problem.
They explain that if a person has obstructive sleep apnea, they are likely to experience nightmares symbolizing shortness of breath.
According to them, the common types of these nightmares are in the form of suffocation, suffocation, trying to breathe under the surface of water or in space, or being cut off inside a broken elevator.
People with this problem tend to have more nightmares in general, even if they don’t feel symptoms.
A previous study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that patients with this problem had more negative dreams than others.
