ID card on the smartphone: Conventional ID cards will soon be superfluous – almost
With this smart eID function, the smartphone is recognized as a “digital legitimation document”, as the Ministry of the Interior puts it. The mobile phone identity card is valid for the state and private bodies. Exceptions apply to police and border controls, for example. Only the ID card is still valid there. The last change to the ID card was only in August. Since then, fingerprints have been mandatory on the document *.
As a precaution, the Ministry of the Interior points out that by the time it starts on Wednesday, not all smartphones will be technically capable of enabling their owners to provide electronic proof of identity with the smart eID. This will “take some time, as is usually the case with the introduction of new technologies”.
Smart eID function: How secure is the identity card on the smartphone?
With the Smart-eID, according to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the data stored in the online ID card is stored in a “specially protected area” of the iPhone * and Co. and can then be used for online identification. The ID card is only required once to save the data from the online ID card on the smartphone. To do this, users have to download the mobile phone app “AusweisApp2”.
