The problems of identifying with bank IDs have come to the fore on Tuesday, when some of Nordea’s customers could not access disorder to identify themselves to third-party services.
Telia told in September that the use of mobile certificates has grown among their customers to a record this year. According to the release, the number of active users had increased by 30 percent during the beginning of the year.
“The trend is still strong. The number of active users and usage volumes are growing all the time,” says Telia’s business manager for value-added services Vesa Reijonen.
Elisa has also seen an increase in the number of mobile certificate usage by several tens of percent, says the person in charge of Elisa’s mobile certificate Stella Kallionpää.
“It can be said that it has been a breakthrough year for mobile certificates,” says Kallionpää.
The companies have not said how many customers use the mobile certificate.
Mobile certificate is taken into use by the operator of your telephone subscription. It is activated on the phone’s SIM card. Telia does not charge its customers anything for the mobile certificate. Elisa and DNA sell it for a fair monthly fee of two euros.
“You could think of a mobile certificate as a digital passport,” Kallionpää describes.
Bank IDs are only needed to activate the mobile certificate online.
After implementation, the mobile certificate is selected as an authentication option, for example, when logging into the authority’s online service. Enter your own phone number on the login page. After this, the phone receives an identification request, which is accepted or rejected.

The mobile certificate has been available for more than ten years, but according to Kallionpää, the vast majority of Finns still use bank credentials for strong identification.
“And when digitization increases, the number of scams also increases. In particular, there is a lot of information fishing.”
Using a mobile certificate ensures that you don’t accidentally enter your bank credentials on a scam website, says Kallionpää.
In addition using a mobile certificate is recommended for service security. For example, Nordea’s disruptions have had the background of denial-of-service attacks, which do not really target the mobile certificate.
According to Kallionpää, Elisa has not been aware of a single mobile certificate outage due to a denial-of-service attack over the years.
“We recommend that everyone use two strong identification methods. So if the bank credentials don’t work, the mobile certificate is still in use.”
