Ice sports A new ice rink will be built next to Herttoniemi Manor: “It will become the Oodi-looking building of the Central Library”

The new internship will alleviate Helsinki’s glaring shortage of ice shifts. Halls for hockey players and figure skaters are coming to the hall.

Herttoniemi next to a historic mansion, the forest has fallen in recent days as an empty plot is cleared.

An ice sports training hall will be built at the intersection of Abraham Wetter Road and Castle Builders Road.

“The felling of the trees started last Thursday and the project is now officially underway,” CEO of the Icefield Foundation Tom Kivimäki says.

A two-lane training hall with two troughs and an ancillary exercise space of 500 square meters will be built on the plot. There will be no auditoriums in the complex, but the hall will operate purely for training purposes.

“It will be quite exceptional visually due to the fact that it will be located in the vicinity of the museum buildings in Herttoniemi. It is made of wood and becomes an Oodi-looking building, but like an ice rink. ”

Helsinki Central Library Oodi has got its architecture plenty of attention in the world as well.

The price estimate for the ice rink project is ten million euros. Kivimäki says the construction schedule is about 12–14 months.

“The hall is mostly in the style of what our new ice rinks, Kaarela and Vuosaari, are,” says Kivimäki, referring to the training halls without the stands.

“In practice, the Icefield Foundation funds it like any other ice rink that has been built.”

Santahamina and crossroads have been planned for years at the intersection of the roads that branch to Roihuvuori. Kivimäki remembers that a swimming pool was to be built on the site about 30 years ago.

For existing swimming pools, the area is too small. However, for an ice sports practice hall, it is the right size.

“This enabled the construction of an ice rink in an area that serves the ice sports in East Helsinki very strongly.. ”

On the other hand, according to Kivimäki, the hall can also be reached by public transport from the center of Helsinki: it is about a kilometer from the Herttoniemi metro station to the ice rink, and there are several bus stops nearby.

“It is this new idea that the utilization of public transport would be maximal,” says Kivimäki.

“This is the optimal place to build, but these are terribly few.”

When the hall is completed, hockey and figure skating divide the ice shifts between their clubs. The distribution chart is not yet ready. The Icefield Foundation only tells clubs the total number of shifts to be distributed.

At the moment, HIFK uses a lot of Paloheinä Hall, Töölö troughs and Hernesaari Iceberg. The operations of Karhu-Cats are largely in Kaarela and Pirkkola. Tigers use Salmisaari Hall.

The Vikings of Vuosaari could be one of the clubs that would receive additional ice from the training place to be completed in Herttoniemi.

There has been a shortage of ice shifts in Helsinki in recent years, and according to Kivimäki, the two troughs in Herttoniemi will bring appropriate relief to the situation.

The demand for ice shifts is growing all the time.

At the same time by the time the Herttoniemi area begins to be completed, the Hernesaari Ice Rink may be subject to demolition.

A new formula is being applied for the area and it would take the ice rink out of its way.

“If the zoning plan for Hernesaari goes through appeals to the Supreme Administrative Court, complete construction will begin there. For us, that means the hall will have to close on May 2023. ”

If the formula does not go through, the Ice Field Foundation intends to apply for an extension to the Hernesaari Training Hall.

“A decision was made two years ago that ice capacity should not be reduced in Helsinki, at least.”
