Swedish NHL goaltender Robin Lehner didn’t show up for medical check-ups at the Vegas Golden Knights training camp, the club he represents, on Wednesday, says an NHL insider Frank Seravalli Daily Faceoff on the site.
According to NHL rules, all contracted players must participate in pre-season medical examinations and physical tests. Vegas is now figuring out if it can release Lehner’s contract after what happened.
Lehner has not played in the NHL since the 2021-22 season due to a hip injury, but has one year remaining on his five-year deal with Vegas.
According to Seravalli, the case is unique. Lehner would earn 4.5 million dollars (about 4.04 million euros) in the last year of his contract.
The Swede has been on the long-term injured list (LTIR), and his average annual salary of five million dollars has therefore not burdened Vegas’ salary cap. In the pre-season medical examinations, it is determined whether the player can be placed on the respective list in the coming season.
Lehner was one of the NHL’s best goaltenders at his peak, but his puck career was tinged with difficulties.
In addition to the hip injury, the Swedish goalkeeper has suffered from mental health problems, drug addiction and ADHD, which he has openly talked about. In 2019, Lehner won the NHL’s Bill Masterton Award, which is given for grit and dedication to hockey.
Lehner has also made headlines for his reckless spending. In 2022 he was placed in personal bankruptcy.
In his career, Lehner has played 364 NHL games with a save percentage of 91.7 and a goals-against average of 2.71. In addition to Vegas, he has represented Buffalo, Chicago, Ottawa and the New York Islanders in the big league.
