The club is owned by Smith Entertainment Group, whose owners are Ryan and Ashley Smith. The Ashleys also own the Utah Jazz, which plays in the NBA basketball league, and has star players Lauri Markkanen. The NHL team plays its home games in the same arena as the Jazz, i.e. the Delta Center.
The new club will replace the Arizona Coyotes in the NHL, but the Coyotes' ownership will not transfer to Utah. The NHL says in its announcement that the owner of the Coyotes Alex on Meruelo there is five years to build an NHL-worthy hall, when the club could return to the NHL.
However, the Coyotes players will move to play in Utah.
