Ice hockey | An insider explains why the Women’s Lions’ accusation letters were delivered to the union just before the Olympics

Teemu Ramstedt details the timeline of the Women’s Lions letter.

Lionesses former head coach Pasi Mustonen commented on the accusations against him on Thursday MTV Urheilu in the interview. In recent days, it has been revealed that 16 players of the Women’s Lions have told the Ice Hockey Federation that they experienced unfair or improper treatment from Mustose during this head coach season.

Initially, the players told about their experiences in anonymous letters, which went through the Players’ Association to the Ice Hockey Federation in January and also to Mustonen’s knowledge.

Nora Räty was one of the 16 authors. He tells about the letters Marika Lehton writing, in the work published on Thursday Noora Räty – The Lion Queen (WSOY).

The players’ association delivered the anonymous letters to the CEO of the Jääkieksliitto Matti Nurminen and the chairman Harri Nummelan to be read on January 26, 2022, i.e. the same day the Lionesses flew to the Beijing Olympics.

In MTV Urheilu’s recent interview with Mustonen and MTV Uutiset Live, it was implied that the Players’ Association would have received the anonymous letters already in the fall, but would have handed over the letters to the Ice Hockey League for reading only in January, just before the Olympics.

Ramstedt denies the information. Ramstedt says that he received the first texts on Saturday, January 22. Not all the texts came at once, and Ramstedt says he received the last texts on Tuesday, January 25.

“As it turned out, on January 26 we met with the Ice Hockey Federation, when it was possible to read these texts. I think we took the information forward in a fairly reasonable amount of time,” says Ramstedt.

Why was the Jääkieckoliitto notified about it on January 26?

“We didn’t want to hide anything, but to move the matter forward as quickly as possible. Someone might think that we should wait for the Olympics and take the matter forward only after that. We felt that the matter had to be moved forward immediately. That was our starting point all along,” says Ramstedt.

The Finnish Ice Hockey Federation took the matter to the Finnish Sports Ethics Center (Suek) for investigation only this week after receiving contacts from a few players in their names last Saturday.

“Why it took so long to start the investigation is another matter. But knowledge [kirjeistä] may have then [tammikuussa] For the ice hockey association.”

Ramstedt says that he personally reached out to 15 out of 16 letter writers in January. Thus, the Players’ Association made sure that the texts have real authors.

According to Ramstedt, one of the authors of the letters did not want to be contacted by the Players’ Association.

Ramstedt cannot say why the players delivered the letters to Ramstedt just in January before the Olympics.

“Speculating about that is a matter for others,” he says.

Uproar the timeline is confused by Mustonen’s recent interview on MTV. Mustonen mysteriously said in the video interview that the accusations will be “about an anniversary”.

It is difficult for Ramstedt to assess what Mustonen means or what he is referring to.

“At least for us, the letters are things at the end of January. According to my understanding, at least most of the texts were written during those times [talvella]. According to my understanding, some of the texts were written only after January 22. I would be surprised if they were already written in the fall,” says Ramstedt.

According to Räty’s news book, the players who felt that Mustonen’s actions were inappropriate met for the first time already in the fall of 2021. In the book, Räty also says that he shared his views on Mustonen’s actions already in the fall of 2021, among others, to the GM of the Lionesses Tuula for Puput.

Lionesses the olympic tournament was mixed with a thick goalie soup, when Mustonen left Noora Rädy on the beach from the competition team. The two had already clashed verbally both in public and behind the scenes.

Mustonen went home from the Olympics in the middle of the tournament citing a serious health situation in his family. He has not been the head coach of the Women’s Lions since the Olympics.

Suek has announced that it will start an investigation into Mustonen’s case.

It is not known how many players are involved in taking Mustonen’s case to Suek for investigation. According to IS, the 16 original players include former and current players of the Women’s Lions.

After his investigation, Suek will hand over the material to the Ice Hockey Federation, which will decide on possible further actions.
