Ice hockey | A holocaust message in the hockey stands – even the player apologized in the middle of the match

A very questionable banner was seen in the CHL match in Poland.

Polish supporters of the hockey team Unia Oswiecim fell into a stylish frenzy during the CHL match against Eisbären Berlin on Saturday, tells Bild.

Before the match, the home fans’ stand had a huge sheet with a message for the German team.

“German extermination camps – welcome to the city of your worst crimes,” the sheet read freely in Finnish.

The city of Oswiecim is known by its German name, Auschwitz.

The Unia Oswiec arena is located only about six kilometers from the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp museum. More than a million people, most of whom were Jews, were killed in the Auschwitz extermination camp built by the Germans during World War II.

“We regret what happened. CHL does not accept any kind of political statements, no matter what the context,” CHL commented to Expressen.

The officials of Unia Oswiecim apologized for the actions of their supporters already during the match, CEO of Eisbären Thomas Bothstede told Bild.

“One player also regretted what happened on the ice,” he said.

Eisbären won the match 4–1. The Finnish teams in the CHL are Ilves, Tappara and Pelicans.
