The father of Mahsa Amini, the 22-year-old whose death after being arrested by the “morality police” has sparked a wave of protests across Iran, accuses the authorities of lying.
In an interview with BBC Persian, Amjad Amini stated that he has not been allowed to see his daughter’s autopsy report and denied that she had previous health problems as Iranian authorities point out.
He also indicated that witnesses told the family that the young woman was beaten during police custody, something that the authorities have denied at all times.
Mahsa Amini, who had come to visit her family, was arrested on Tuesday, September 13, at the exit of a Tehran metro station by the Iranian Islamic religious police, officially called the Gasht-e Ershad (Guidance Patrols). She was accused of breaking the law that requires women to cover their hair with a scarf, and their arms and legs with loose clothing.
The young woman of Kurdish ethnicity, from the northwestern city of Saqez, in the province of Kurdistan, died on Friday in a Tehran hospital, after spending three days in a coma.
Arrest
Iranian authorities say Amini was not ill-treated, but suffered “sudden heart failure” after being detained in Tehran by the country’s “morality police”.
But her father stated that her 17-year-old brother, Kiarash, who was there when she was arrested, was told that she had been beaten.
“My son was with her. Some witnesses told my son that she was beaten in the van and at the police station,” he said.
“My son begged them not to take her, but they beat him too, ripped his clothes off.
“I asked them to show me the body cameras of the security officers, but they told me that the cameras had no battery,” he explained.
Iranian authorities said her daughter was wearing indecent clothing at the time of her arrest. However, her father defended her claiming that she had always worn a long coat.
Doctors prevented him from seeing his daughter
Amini also stated that she was repeatedly prevented from seeing her daughter’s body by medical staff after her death.
“I wanted to see my daughter, but they wouldn’t let me in,” she said.
He also stated that when he asked to see his autopsy report, the doctor replied: “I’ll write what I want and it has nothing to do with you.”
The father of the deceased girl stated that no information about the autopsy has been provided to the family.
She only saw her daughter’s body after it was wrapped for burial, when only her feet and face were visible.
“There were bruises on his feet,” he said. “I asked the doctors to examine his feet.”
According to Amini, the authorities promised to investigate the cause of the injuries, but received no response. “They ignored me. Now they lie.”
In an earlier statement, Mehdi Faruzesh, director general of forensic medicine in Tehran province, stated that “no signs of injuries to the head and face, no bruising around the eyes, no fractures at the base of the skull have been observed. of Mehsa Amini”.
Authorities also said there were no signs of internal injuries.
accusations about his health
Amini also denied claims that her daughter had health problems that could have contributed to her death.
The director general of forensic medicine in Tehran province reported that Amini had undergone brain surgery when she was 8 years old.
“They’re lying,” his father said. “He has not been in any hospital in the last 22 years, except for some cold-related illnesses.”
“She has never had any disease, she has never had an operation,” he added.
The BBC has spoken with two colleagues of the young Iranian, who said they had no record of having been hospitalized before.
His father also denied other information released these days about Amini’s health, which indicated that he had fainted several times while recently working in a store, and described it as “false”.
college ambition
According to his family, Amini was going to start studying at the university next week.
His trip to Tehran was going to be his last vacation before starting the course.
“He wanted to study microbiology,” said his father. “He wanted to be a doctor, a dream that will never come true,” he declared.
“Her mother is very ill. We all miss her,” he said.
“Yesterday he would have been 23 years old,” he added.
