Neighbors protest cuts in Pediatric, Digestive and Mental Health services
Residents of Cieza demonstrated yesterday to demand that the Murcian Health Service (SMS) recover several medical specialties that suffered cuts due to the pandemic and that continue without professionals at the Hospital de la Vega Lorenzo Guirao. Paediatrics, Digestive and Mental Health are three of the services that are not offered or are insufficient. Through the Cieza Hospital Platform and the group of parents who demand a better service for their children, the protesters gathered at the gates of the center and called for the resignation of the manager of the area.
The platform also denounced that one of the worst situations occurs with Radiology, since there is no specialist on duty in the Emergency Room, the same as happens with Pediatrics. “In this case, the children, if it is after 6 in the afternoon, have to go to La Arrixaca even at dawn,” says its spokesman, Juan Ortiz,
From the management of area IX they respond that with the arrival of the pandemic many non-essential services had to be suppressed, although they assure that, gradually, they are returning. Regarding Pediatrics, they indicated that children’s emergencies “are treated in general emergencies as in all hospitals where there are no pediatric beds,” and they assure that emergency personnel since the pandemic “have been reinforced with four more doctors and a guard more, with a total of 18 doctors. “It is not true – they add – that there are radiologists in all hospitals, since Yecla has the same problem as Cieza”, and regarding Mental Health, they explain that it is a project of the Mental Health Management that was stopped with the pandemic. However, they point out that it is “a medium and long-term project.”
